Let me start with saying that although the players were a big disappointment I have to admit the sound quality was good when they would play. I initially bought this player from Walmart without doing any research (big mistake), Walmart had it for $59 + tax for a total of just over $63. At first I was not able to play with it much so by the time i sat down and really started using it I found that it had some glitches like the thing would lock up and have to be reset, there were alot of times when a song wouldn’t start at the beginning but about 10 seconds or so into it. I updated the firmware on the Philips website and it didn’t help. I then tried to take it back to Walmart but guess what? WALMART HAS A 15 DAY RETURN POLICY FOR MP3 PLAYERS AND A LOT OF THEIR ELECTRONICS. I was forced to go to Philips Customer service who had me do a couple resets and try to update firmware again then decided to send me another unit. I received the new unit and was disgusted to find out it was a REFURBISHED UNIT. I thought great I paid over $60 for a mp3 player that already broke for someone else, nice touch Philips. I started playing with that one and found that it had all the same problems (serial #’s were different, I checked) but this one actually was a little worse as it had terrible lag when scrolling through the menu or trying to move to the next song while listening to one. By the way the menu and software in general is very lacking compared to the competition, this thing won’t even show album art which isn’t a deal breaker with me but at least catch up with the times. So I’m on the line with customer service again who had me go through the same things as last time only to agree to send me another unit. My third unit (original plus 2 refurbs) arrives and it again is REFURBISHED. This one was actually working pretty well for about two weeks except for the lag problems which I figured could be caused by having the 4gb pretty much maxed out then one day I turn it off and when I turn it back on I get nothing but the Philips welcome page. I try reset a few times all it will do is turn the welcome page off and nothing else. I could then power it on and get the welcome page back but other than that totally dead, the only thing that would turn the page off was the reset. I tried to plug into my computer to use the reset function from the device manager but now the computer doesn’t see it and it does absolutely nothing when plugged up, it won’t even charge. I call customer service and ask for a refund and am told that they don’t do that for mp3 players. They say it’s my drivers on my computer and want me to go to Microsoft site and update then which I did and it didn’t help. They still refused to give a refund or send me a brand new unit (not that it would have helped). I should also mention about customer service that out of the multiple reps I spoke with they were all very courteous with the exception of some jacka** named Keith (I still remember his name) who was extremely defensive about me wanting a refund and wouldn’t let me talk to his supervisor. I asked if I could talk to them and he said and I quote “You sure can’t” at that point I figured this waste of space was probably the supervisor himself. I then asked if my replacement would be another refurbished unit and he said and I quote “It most certainly will be”. Needless to say I am done with Philips so called customer service and products all together. I have another refurb coming which is taking a lot longer this time as I’m sure I’ve been labeled a problem customer. I see myself as a customer who was duped out of almost $65. When the new unit comes in it has already been promised to my 6 year old son. I figure he won’t be as disappointed when it quits again and won’t feel ripped off like I do. I have already bought a new mp3 player that I am very, very happy with. I got the 8gb SanDisk Sansa Fuze and it is awesome and works flawlessly not only with the built in 8gb but also has an expansion micro sd/sdhc slot for up to 16gb more.( I only have an 8gb card added but it works great). So if you get anything out of this remember, don’t buy expensive things without internet research first and if buying an mp3 player don’t buy one from a company who knows nothing about them like PHILIPS.

okay i get this thing for 60 bucks. It works fine for a little bit, but the controls are all screwde up. if i press fast forward it will rewind and it will pop up the stupid annoying “do you want to add this to the playlist”. it will do the the same for rewind. if i press the menu button it will pause the song and go to to the menu or stop it go to to the menu then go back to the song and restart it. charging is another pain. the night before the long trip its on 2 bars go load it up it starts charging come back the next morning its on zero batteries? its just a waist of money and will brake down. im tired of all these mp3 pieces of crap im getting an ipod or zune i’ll pay a hundred bucks for something that will last for few years than pay half the price for something that will last for a month with no problems.

Think constantly froze during regular use. Had to carry a sharp object to repeatedly reset the thing. Finally completely crapped out after 3 months. Bought a zune and couldn’t be happier now. This is the last Philips product I’ll ever purchase. Not even worth the $50 they sell for now.

This is a great little no frills player for a great price. The reviewers are correct about the video and the playlist issues, but if all you want is a great little music player, it’s just fine.
The sound is great thanks for Philips patented FullSound technology…..basically it’s supposed to scan the file and add missing elements back (or compensate for) to the losses with any compressed file. I have to say, it sounds quite nice.
Loading the player is easy using Windows Explorer and drag and drop. It’s recognized as a USB disk drive, so you can also easily store data files. The player also allows you to view folders, instead of just albums, genre, etc. It’s easy to create your own folders and then drop files into them……then all you do is go to the folder view, and play from there….nice workaround for the lack of playlist functionality.
Overall, it’s bare bones, but it’s really a very good little player that’s easy to use, and sounds great. For the price, it’s a great buy.

random shuffling is horrible. It had nothing random linked to it at all. You will easily realize the repetition and I am amazed that I have not yet broken this device given that its lack of innovation is quite frustrating. I cannot create a playlist. I cannot add a song to my favorite. This product is really junk.
